Fuel tax rate

As of April 1, 2025, the Northwest Territories (NWT) fuel tax rate is $0.040 per kilometre.

Fuel tax is collected through Single Trip Permit applications or as a Fuel Tax Self Reporter (must be approved with the GNWT). If you originate in the NWT, then leave the territory, and come back into the territory, you will only need to purchase a one-way fuel tax from the border to home.

Permits can be purchased through a client’s online account or an approved third-party permit agent.
